SciDAC Institute for Ultra-Scale Visualization
Ken Moreland Mission: to address the upcoming peta-scale visualization challenges facing computational science and engineering. The Institute will revolutionize the very process of scientific discovery by equipping scientists with tools that shed light on the knowledge hidden in previously incomprehensible datasets.
Technical approach: Our expertise covers the full spectrum of parallel visualization technology, and we identify five critical technology focus areas:
- Parallel rendering framework and API
- Parallel I/O
- Parallel visualization algorithms
- GPU abstraction and interfaces
- Parallel visualization tools
Importance: This institute exists to meet the both short-term and long-term needs of SciDAC and DOE applications. As simulation moves to petascale, exoscale, and beyond, nearly every aspect of visualization will change, from the massive amounts of I/O, to the hardware we perform visualization on, to the visual metaphors we use.
